History of Lions Club of Sibu Host
Lions Club of Sibu Host was founded on 9th May 1967 and chartered on 17th June 1967 with nineteen members and since its inception the membership has grown to a formidable size of fifty- eight. A famous timber industrialist. Mr. Hii Yu Chiong was installed as the Chartered President on the evening of 17th June 1967. Throughout the past 35 years, Lions Club of Sibu Host has been carrying out numerous community service projects including sponsoring not less than eight hole-in-heart patients to overseas for cardiac surgery providing free medical care for people in the rural areas, conducting career talks for school leavers, awarding scholarships and distributing free spectacles to the poor, cornea transplant for eye patients, Artificial limbs to an accident victims, care for people in the rural areas, conducting meetings and sponsoring many cultural shows and musical recitals for benefit of music lovers, music students and for the promotion of goodwill and understanding through the exchange of cultural performances among the different nations. The biggest project of all was the sponsoring of constructing of the Sibu Golf Course, building a Dinning Hall for the old folks of Sibu Benevolent Society orginising an Aerobatics Air Show and even an international wrestling show in Sibu and many other projects. Under the golf course project, Lions club of Sibu Host raised over $300,000.00 from the Lions members and the public. The 88-acre Golf Course, dotted with beautiful trees, lakes and a clubhouse is the fruit of Sibu Lions initiative and generousity. This Golf course which is situated at 11th mile, Oya Road, Sibu now has 18 holes and a new club house, has been a place for the Sibu public to play a game of golf after a hectic day of business.
The then Sibu Lions Clubs hosted 13th District 308 Lions Convention in 1975 and jointly with Lions Club of Sibu Central, Sibu Mandarin and Sibu Seduan hosted the 34th MD308 Lions Convention in 1996 and MD308 Leo Forum in 1995.
Lions Club of Sibu Host is proud to sponsor the Lions Club of Sibu Mandarin and Lions Club of Sibu Central ( previously known Lioness Club of Sibu ) who subsequently sponsored Lions Club of Sibu Seduan; in the year 1999/2000 Lions Club of Sibu Mandarin sponsored Lions Club of Phalawan which in turn sponsor the Lions Club of Sibu Berjaya making it the sixth Lions Club in Sibu.
With a humble beginning on 9/5/1967 with 18 chartered members, the number of families of Lions Clubs in Sibu including Leos have reached nearly 1,000 strong Lions!
In the past 35 years Lions Club of Sibu Host has been under the leadership of the following past Presidents:-
Lion Hii Yu Chiong, Lion Senator Ting Ming Hoi, Lion Chew Pang Cheng, Lion Ting Ing Chiew, Lion John Lim Ung Hui, Lion Hii Ching Giu, Lion Ling Bang Hung, Lion Haji Zainuddin Bin Haji Hassan, Lion Robert Lau Hoi Chew, Lion Chong Siew Chiang, Lion Hii Ching Chiong, Lion Charles Ling , Lion Vincent Lau, Lion James Lau Kung Wuong, Lion Datuk Lau Hui Kang, Lion Hii Yu Ho, Lion Philip Law Boung Hoo, Lion Wong Liang Pung, Lion Cheng Yik Siong, Lion Peter Yik, Lion Henry Lau Lee Kong, Lion Lau Choon Liong, Lion Francis Tiong Huo Ming, Lion David Sia, Lion Ting Kong Siin, Lion Siek King Kuong, Lion Michael Wong Ngee Khih, Lion Chan Bak Yaw, Lion Henry Ting Yong Ginn, Lion Thomas Tieng Mee Tung, Lion Joseph Moh Ki Ying, Lion Clarence Ting Ing Horh, Lion Luke Nee, Lion Stephen Ting, Lion Eric Chiew, Lion Wong Mee, Lion Jimmy Sim, Lion Jessica Lau, Lion William Hong and this year Lion Terrence Chen.
Among these past Presidents Lions Club of Sibu Host has produced three District Governors ( two DG of District 308 and one DG of 308-A2 Lions International) PDG Lion Ting Ing Chiew, PDG Lion Y.B. Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew and IPDG Lion Cheng Yik Siong, one Deputy District Governor, Lion Vincent Lau, one Cabinet Secretary Lion Clarence Ting Ing Horh, one Cabinet Treasurer Lion Peter Yik Lik Huat, one Region Chairman, Lion Cheng Yik Siong, 11 Zone Chairman namely Lion Hii Yu Chiong, Lion John Lim Ung Hui, Lion Robert Lau Hoi Chew, Lion Hii Ching Chiong, Lion Vincent Lau, Lion Philip Law Buong Hoo, Lion Michael Wong Ngee Khih, Lion Luke Nee Lian Chin and Lion Stephen Ting. Lion Michael Wong Ngee Khih has also served as District Chairman for three terms, one for Leo Sarawak, another for Diabetes Awareness Sarawak and one for Bulletin. Lion Jessica also served as District Chairman before.
Lion Club of Sibu Host was once classified as a rich man’s club. However, this image has been changed completely by the numerous community service projects carried out by the Club to benefit the less fortunate fellow human beings. All civic minded and public spirited citizens who have the welfare of the people in heart and who are prepared to sacrifice a little time and energy are welcome to join the Lions Club of Sibu Host. It is anticipated that Lions Club of Sibu Host will be able to forge ahead to yet another year of exciting community service and implementation of Lions International’s motto “We Serve” to the fullest degree.
